Could the New York Jets swing a trade for Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell?

The Jets’ quarterback room is obviously set for next season. They have Aaron Rodgers under center, and Tyrod Taylor will be serving as his backup.

However, New York’s future at the position is murky.

Rodgers is 40 years old, and no one really knows how much longer he will continue to play. Taylor is in his 30s and is certainly nothing more than a very capable reserve.

That opens the door for a young signal-caller like O’Connell, who is currently in a rather intriguing situation in Las Vegas.

O’Connell took over as the Raiders’ starting quarterback midway through last season, but it seems pretty clear that Las Vegas is not fully committed to him. It signed Gardner Minshew in free agency, and rumors have been persisting about the Raiders trying to trade up for a quarterback in the NFL Draft.

That’s why ESPN’s Bill Barnwell thinks the Jets could acquire O’Connell from Las Vegas in a pretty interesting move.

Barnwell has New York sending the 10th overall pick and a fouth-rounder to the Raiders in exchange for O’Connell, the 13th pick and a second-rounder.

This would allow Las Vegas to move ahead of the Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos to potentially select Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

Of course, whether or not McCarthy is actually available at No. 10 remains to be seen, as there is recent buzz that he could actually go in the top three. Many feel that if he does slip past the New England Patriots at No. 3., he ultimately won’t get by the New York Giants at No. 6.

Still, if the Raiders get intel that McCarthy could be on the board at No. 10, this is a deal they could certainly consider making.

Meanwhile, the Jets would receive a young quarterback in Aidan O’Connell to learn behind Rodgers in 2024.
