Marlon Davidson, DE, Auburn
The Browns still need to continue to bolster their defensive line around Myles Garrett, particularly at the defensive end spot. There are multiple factors to consider, Olivier Vernon is entering the final year of his contract and Adrian Clayborn is a 31-year-old rotational player.
If the Browns are unable to land someone like Jadeveon Clowney, they would need to turn to the NFL Draft to add another impactful defensive end. A potential option that could be available for Cleveland is Marlon Davidson out of Auburn, who totaled 48 combined tackles (11.5 for loss) and 6.5 sacks last season.
Lance Zierlein of NFL.com expressed that Davidson is best playing outside the tackle and can be a base 4-3 end in the NFL. The scouting report also mentioned that it ‘might take time’ for Davidson to develop from being a ‘good backup to starter.’
Four-year starter who posted elevated production against the run and pass as a senior. Davidson has been durable and his play consistent, but he fails to really stand out in the shadow of teammate Derrick Brown. The team who drafts him will need to determine how best to utilize him because despite his build, he’s most effective when playing outside the tackle. He’s athletic enough to work as a base 4-3 end with sub-rush talent, but getting over the hump from good backup to starter might take time.
Davidson stands at 6’3″ and weighs 303 lbs with 33″ arms and 10″ hands. He didn’t end up participating in many of the on-field drills at the NFL Scouting Combine but did record 21 reps on the bench press and clocked in with an unofficial 5.04 for the 40-yard dash.
Even if the Browns were to sign Clowney, it would likely be to a short-term deal. It would be in their best interest for the future to add a prospect from the NFL Draft. It would provide them with a cheap option to develop in a rotational role and eventually shoulder more responsibility.
