Chidobe Awuzie is entering a contract year
The Cowboys have the luxury of Chidobe Awuzie being able to step into the primary boundary cornerback role after Byron Jones’ departure. Last season, Awuzie admirably filled the secondary role opposite of Jones and will have a perfect opportunity for a breakout campaign in 2020.
There is potential concern when it comes to the Cowboys being able to retain Awuzie beyond 2020 though. The 25-year-old is entering the final year of his current contract and if he plays at a high-level next season, there is a possibility he could earn a large contract Dallas can’t afford.
It’s way too early to be making definitive predictions about the free agency landscape for Awuzie. However, with Jones landing a huge contract and leaving, preparing to have to replace another boundary corner is something for the Cowboys to at least consider.
By selecting a corner like CJ Henderson, the Cowboys would have another talented option on the boundary in the short-term. Meanwhile, they’d have a player that projects as being a top corner for a team at the NFL level in case Awuzie were to depart at some point.
