Talented Young Core
On film, Eason gives us quite the Jekyll and Hyde impression, when looking at what he’s able to do under pressure vs. with a clean pocket. Football Outsiders’ Derrik Klassen tracked play-by-play for each of the top nine QB prospects. Eason ranked worst, sporting just a 36.1 percent completion rate when under pressure. For reference, Joe Burrow had a 63.4 percent clip, and that was far beyond the average of those guys (50.5).
It’s difficult to find a more ideal fit for Eason than the Indianapolis Colts, who had all five of their starting offensive linemen play at least 1,000 snaps in 2019. The caveat is that this is somewhat rare. And, if we’re smart, it makes sense to be looking at how that could look beyond 2020 and 2021.
That bodes well. Anchored by All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson (23-years-old), the talented Colts’ offensive line is also spry and useful. Four of their five starters are under the age of 27, and the lone graybeard, 31-year-old Anthony Castonzo, is essentially a guarantee, playing in 132 of a possible 144 games.
Philip Rivers signed for this exact reason. And that should benefit Eason too. He ranked as the No. 9 best quarterback when given a clean pocket on PFF’s scale, hitting on 72.1 percent of his passes, and dropping in 20 of his 23 touchdowns.
In shorter terms, it’s a good time to be working laundry for the Indianapolis Colts.
