Pittsburgh Steelers
Considering all of the circumstances, Mike Tomlin deserved some votes for Coach of the Year in 2019. After trading Antonio Brown and letting Le’Veon Bell walk in free agency, the Pittsburgh Steelers looked a bit different last season.
It also didn’t help that Ben Roethlisberger sustained a season-ending elbow injury in Week 2 of the season. While Roethlisberger was sidelined, both Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges were given chances to start. It goes without saying that neither of them proved they could even be a No. 2 quarterback in the NFL.
If the Steelers had a more competent quarterback to replace Roethlisberger in 2019, they would have been able to sneak into the playoffs. Despite Roethlisberger returning in 2020, it’s far from a guarantee that he’s the same quarterback he once was or is able to remain healthy.
As a matter of fact, Roethlisberger has started in all 16 games for Pittsburgh just once in the past five seasons. Signing Winston would give the Steelers a much-needed upgrade at their backup quarterback spot. Above all, Tomlin could be exactly the type of coach that’s needed to mentor Winston and help him mature next season.
