Still Lack Enough Receiving Talent
There was a major reliance on Allen Robinson from the Bears last season. He was targeted 154 times resulting in 98 receptions, 1,147 yards, and seven touchdowns. Next up in receptions was Tarik Cohen (104) out of the backfield while Anthony Miller (656) came second in receiving yards.
It was clear the Bears needed to go out and add more receiving talent into the mix. They chose to take former Notre Dame tight end Cole Kmet in the second-round despite it being a terrible class for that position and waited until the fifth round to take a wide receiver.
The main addition to the Bears’ receiving corps this offseason was the signing of Ted Ginn Jr. in free agency after the 2020 NFL Draft. The Saints felt the need to let him walk in free agency because he lacks much for route-running ability in addition to having a problem with dropping passes.
The simple fact of the matter is that relying on Ginn as a key contributor in a receiving corps is a failing strategy. While he may provide speed to run deep routes to help spread the defense, he ranked tied for 11th in drops last season while totaling just 421 receiving yards.
