Mitchell Trubisky Gets Benched
It’s no secret Mitchell Trubisky has failed to reach the lofty expectations that come with being the No. 2 selection. To make matters worse, he happened to be selected in the same draft class as Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson.
The reality of the situation for Trubisky is that he’s treading on thin ice and he appears unlikely to salvage the situation. The Bears already felt obligated to decline the fifth-year option on his contract and a need to add talented competition into the mix by signing Nick Foles.
It’s not uncommon for a team to bail on a quarterback they selected early in the NFL Draft even after picking up the fifth-year option on that player’s contract. A perfect example occurred last season between the Tennessee Titans and Marcus Mariota.
The Titans decides to bench Mariota after he underwhelmed to start the season in favor of giving Ryan Tannehill a chance. That turned out to be the spark that ignited a run to the AFC Championship Game and Mariota’s eventual departure to the Las Vegas Raiders as a backup.
