2. Giants’ Weapons Have Potential
When the Giants decided to trade away Odell Beckham Jr., the thought was their offense would decline substantially without a true No. 1 receiver. Instead, Darius Slayton has impressed and appears to be emerging as a legitimate top receiver.
Against the Steelers, Slayton was targeted by Daniel Jones on 9 plays and those attempts resulted in 6 receptions, 102 receiving yards, and 2 touchdown grabs. It was one of the more intriguing wide receiver outings in Week 1 of the 2020 NFL season.
With Slayton setting the tone, the Giants’ other offensive weapons will need to step up going forward. It will be easier to do so since it’s not a weekly occurrence that New York faces quite as impactful of a defense as what the Steelers have built.
One player to watch, in particular is Evan Engram. He has a high ceiling due to his ability to make a real impact as a run-after-the-catch there wasn’t on display in Week 1 as he finished with just 2 catches for 9 yards in this particular outing.
If Engram can reach his potential, the Giants’ passing offense could be intriguing throughout the upcoming season. The offensive line must show improvement and give Jones what he needs to leave it up to his own development.
