Cornerback
The greatest loss the Cowboys sustained this offseason occurred through the departure of Byron Jones to the Miami Dolphins. He solidified himself as being one of the top corners in the NFL and was critical in Dallas’ defense. Without him, it makes sense to consider drafting a corner.
There are additional factors that come into play for the Cowboys and the corner spot. Let’s not forget, Chidobe Awuzie is entering the final season of his current contract. He could very well end up capitalizing on receiving a larger role with Jones gone and become to expensive to re-sign.
Having a cornerback prospect in the mix would help the Cowboys be prepared for any possible outcome in the near future. With Jones already gone and Awuzie not under contract long-term, being left with neither and no prospect developing would be concerning.
The cornerback position is not an easy one to adjust to playing at the NFL level or to develop quickly. That’s why simply drafting a player at this spot when it’s a pressing need is already too late. The key is to be more prepared and calculated and have talent in the pipeline.
