Matt Breida can fill in the No. 1 running back role

Losing running back Jerick McKinnon in the offseason was a serious blow to head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offensive scheme. Not only is he someone that can change the game with his speed in the outside-zone running game, but he’s a phenomenal target out of the backfield.

A lot of questions circulated about the production the 49ers were going to get out of the backs after that injury. It’s what led to the signing of a former Shanahan back, Alfred Morris, and a severe overhaul of talent at the position.

However, this latest game by second-year pro Matt Breida shows that he can take over the lead back role.

Breida finished the day with 138 rushing yards on 11 carries and this 66-yard rushing touchdown. He added three catches for 21 receiving yards as well.

He flashed this same playing ability during his rookie season when quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was inserted into the starting lineup. During that five-game stretch, Breida put together 234 rushing yards (more than half his rushing production by that point) and one touchdown on 52 carries.

He’ll continue to be a more integral part of this offense from this game moving forward.
