Cut Down on Turnovers

The next step for the San Francisco 49ers will be to maximize their offensive efficiency. One particular way to achieve this would be to cut down on turnovers in order to make the most out of their drives.

Something to consider, the 49ers had 12.0% of their drives end in a turnover and that was tied with the Houston Texans for the 12th highest frequency in the NFL in 2019. All of the teams that had a greater turnover percentage on drives failed to make the playoffs.

There wasn’t a particular area that plagued the 49ers in the turnover department that requires urgent improvement. They were near the middle of the pack in interceptions averaging 0.75 per game (14th most) while giving up 0.6 fumbles per game (T-16th most).

It’s fascinating to think about the possibilities for the 49ers if they were to become one of the better teams in the NFL at minimizing turnovers. They already score at one of the highest frequencies and their defense would have less compromising situations to have to overcome.
