Open Up the Offense More

Many point to deep throws as a weakness in Jimmy Garoppolo’s skill-set but that isn’t a fair characterization. While he certainly could take more shots downfield on a more consistent basis, he has actually been quite impactful when he does attempt these throws.

The level of execution Garoppolo had on deep throws was quite impressive last season. In 2019, according to Sports Info Solutions, he threw a touchdown on 22% of these particular attempts and threw a catchable ball 72% of the time, both of which led the NFL (min. 30 attempts).

Opening up the offense more and having Garoppolo taking shots down the field could make the 49ers more difficult to stop. It would help when San Francisco has to match up with some of the more prolific offensive teams in the NFL, such as the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 49ers are a strong running team and it’s important they can do what it takes to consistently force the defense to play an honest approach. Having Garoppolo throw the ball deep more often would help make San Francisco a more layered offensive attack.
