5 Free Agents Named Possible Targets For The Dallas Cowboys

The 2023 offseason is a very important one for the Dallas Cowboys. They have improved each season under Mike McCarthy as head coach, winning double-digit games in back-to-back seasons in 2021 and 2022 for the first time since 1991-1996. But, despite the regular season success, the team still cannot get over the hump in the postseason.

They have been eliminated by the San Francisco 49ers in consecutive postseasons. For the 2021 season, it was during Super Wild Card Weekend at home. This season, it was in the Divisional Round in San Francisco.

That loss makes it seven consecutive with a chance to advance to the NFC Championship Game as the Cowboys haven’t gotten to that point since their Super Bowl victory in the 1995 season. To get over that hump, the team needs to make some upgrades this offseason.

Adam Schultz of Fan Nation Cowboy Maven shared some moves that the team should consider this offseason. Jerry Jones is itching for another Super Bowl title and is not afraid to make some moves to upgrade the roster in any way possible.

There isn’t a franchise in the NFL more willing to go for it than the Cowboys with Jones at the helm. If he takes that approach again, there are a few players who should pique his interest. One potential target is Devin Singletary, who would cost a fraction of the price it would to franchise tag or retain Tony Pollard. With Ezekiel Elliott also a possible free agent, the Cowboys’ backfield could look drastically different.

Staying on the offensive side of the ball, Dallas needs to add a little juice to the passing game. Wide receiver D.J. Chark would be a nice complement to CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup with his athleticism and field-stretching ability. That kind of big play skill set was missing from the offense.

Along the offensive line, a player such as Trai Turner would provide insurance on the interior. While he isn’t performing at the Pro Bowl level he has previously in his career, the Cowboys could certainly do worse when it comes to veteran depth.

On the other side of the ball, a true all-in move was mentioned. Turner’s teammate with the Washington Commanders, Daron Payne, would be a huge addition to the defensive tackle rotation in Dallas. The Cowboys had one of the least productive defensive tackle groups in the NFL last season and Payne is a true game-changer on the interior.

In the secondary, Trevon Diggs could use some help. A veteran such as Patrick Peterson, coming off one of the best seasons of his career in 2022 with the Minnesota Vikings, would be an ideal fit. While no longer a No. 1 shutdown corner, Peterson still has something left in the tank and would give the Cowboys a nice trio along with Diggs and Daron Bland.
