Marlon Mack, Indianapolis Colts
Despite continued success pounding the rock when given a starting role, Marlon Mack is one of the more underrated running backs in the league since 2017. He was drafted in the fourth round and played behind Frank Gore before supplanting him two years ago and has rushed for 1,999 yards and 17 touchdowns since then. Last year, he led the team with 1,091 yards and a 4.42 yard per carry average, but there are a couple of reasons why he might fall off this year.
For starters, the Colts completely re-tooled their offense this offseason, most notably with the signing of 38-year-old QB Philip Rivers. The gunslinger has favored pass-catching running backs over the years, like Darren Sproles and Austin Ekeler for example, but Mack does not offer that general skill set. He graded out with a 43.5 in receiving, which resulted in a measly 82 yards total.
Even worse, the Colts spent a second-round pick on Heisman candidate Jonathan Taylor out of Wisconsin, who is almost assuredly guaranteed a major role in the offense as a rookie.
Mack will still factor into the offensive game plan due to his familiarity with Frank Reich and previous success, but expect him to have far less than 247 carries and less opportunities overall this season.
