5 NFL running backs poised to take a step back in 2020

Leonard Fournette, Jacksonville Jaguars

Remember less than two and a half years ago when the Jaguars were less than a quarter away from the Super Bowl thanks to Blake Bortles and Leonard Fournette? That seems like a completely different era at this point, as Bortles isn’t on the roster and Fournette has not lived up to his No. 4 overall draft pick status.

In his three years in the NFL, the former LSU star has accumulated 666 carries for 2,631 yards, just over 1,000 receiving yards, and 19 total touchdowns. These numbers seem like the middle of the road for starting tier RBs, although they are brought down significantly by his miserable 2018 season.

Fournette actually bounced back in a big way last year, producing career highs in rushing yards, receiving yards, and yards per carry, but scored a measly three touchdowns all season. This was all while playing alongside rookie Gardner Minshew and former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles, but the end result was a 6-10 record and a last place finish in the AFC South.

A mass exodus of veterans subsequently followed, and the Jags are now the odds on favorite to earn the number one overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. With such low expectations, the team added an additional insult to Fournette by declining his fifth-year option this offseason.

The Jaguars did sign pass-catching threat Chris Thompson, but do not feature another viable rusher on the roster. The offense will be led by Minshew, who looks to develop more in his second year, but is not a legitimate threat to defenses at this point in his career. Due to this fact, expect a stacked box to minimize rushing gains all season as teams will dare the Jags to beat them through the air. This may very well be Fournette’s final season in Jacksonville, and things may get ugly quickly.
