There has been a lot of debate this offseason about what the New York Giants are going to do at the quarterback position. Daniel Jones isn’t going anywhere as his contract makes it impossible for Big Blue to move on from him even if they wanted to. But, his presence shouldn’t deter them from adding to the position.

The Giants are going to add a quarterback to the roster one way or another. The route they take to do so has not been decided. Will they go with a veteran stopgap that can compete with Jones for the starting spot? Or will it be a rookie in the draft they look to develop?

Right now, Jones and Tommy DeVito are the only quarterbacks on the Giants’ roster. Tyrod Taylor is a free agent and could test the waters after showing some solid play with Big Blue in 2023.

NFL News & Rumors: Daniel Jones, Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears, 2024 NFL Draft, New York Giants Updates

If general manager Joe Schoen opts to go the draft route, it would be risky. New York is slated to pick sixth, which could be outside the range of the top quarterback prospects. If they want to guarantee landing one of the top guys, a trade up the board will be necessary.

What could that kind of trade look like? Ali Bhanpuri of NFL.com put together some hypothetical trade packages for teams looking to move up in a trade with the Chicago Bears for the No. 1 pick. Not surprisingly, the price to move up is astronomical as Caleb Williams is considered an elite prospect throughout the league.

The hypothetical trade Chanpuri came up with is that Chicago sends the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft to New York, which counts for 3,000 points. In exchange, the Giants would send Nos. 6, 39 and 70 in the 2024 NFL Draft along with first-rounders in 2025 and 2026.

That is a high price for New York to pay, as it is a 28 percent premium to move up five spots. But, given the quality of prospect Williams is, it should come as no surprise that it would cost a pretty penny to land the selection to pick him.

Schoen would be mortgaging the future to make this deal, something ownership may not be okay with. They are committed to building around Jones and a move such as this one would signal the beginning of the end of his tenure in New York.

While that is something many fans believe should happen, the Giants have given zero indication that is what they are leaning toward right now. It will be interesting to see how things play out, as their strategy in free agency will be telling when it comes to their 2024 NFL Draft plans.
