The San Francisco 49ers own the 31st overall pick in the NFL Draft this Thursday, but they could be interested in moving up.
Kyle Posey of Niners Nation has suggested that the 49ers swing a trade with the Miami Dolphins for the 21st pick in order to select University of Texas wide receiver Adonai Mitchell.
Posey proposes that San Francisco trades the 31st pick, a fifth-round pick, seventh-rounder and a 2025 third-round selection to the Dolphins in the deal.
Mitchell is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he caught 55 passes for 845 yards and 11 touchdowns. He began his collegiate career at Georgia and snared 29 balls for 426 yards and four scores during his freshman season. He then missed extensive time due to injury the following year, logging just nine catches for 134 yards and three scores.
The 21-year-old then transferred to Texas.
Mitchell has great size at 6-foot-4 and ran a 4.34-second 40-yard dash in the Scouting Combine in February, so he has terrific physical attributes.
Plus, the Niners may end up in need of a wide out if they trade Brandon Aiyuk this offseason. Aiyuk is entering the final year of his deal, and due to financial constraints, the 49ers may not be able to afford to keep him long term. A rumor surfaced that Aiyuk recently asked for a trade, but his agent shot the rumor down as false.
Still, Aiyuk doesn’t seem open to take a hometown discount, so San Francisco may have to prepare for life without the 26-year-old.
We’ll see if Mitchell ends up being the answer.
