The Atlanta Falcons are in need of a quarterback, and general manager Terry Fontenot made his thoughts on the subject very clear this week.
With the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine right around the corner, Fontenot expressed the Falcons’ desire to address their situation under center this offseason and said they will explore all avenues to get it done.
“That’s a top priority for us this offseason, and it’s exciting,” Fontenot told NFL Network’s Steve Wyche and James Palmer. “Again, not only people that have been in the building, but people outside of the building from Raheem (Morris) and (offensive coordinator) Zac (Robinson), (QBs coach) T.J. Yates, (assistant coach) Ken Zampese, (assistant QBs coach) DJ Williams — we have a lot of really smart people in the building. We’re going to spend a lot of time together, make sure we attack that the right way. We’re not going to close any doors, be it trades, free agency, the draft. We will make sure we keep an open mind there and we’re going to attack it and make sure we get it right.”
Atlanta rolled out Desmond Ridder at signal-caller to begin this past season, but midway through the year, he was replaced by Taylor Heinicke.
The two quarterbacks then traded places throughout the remainder of the year, but neither player inspired much confidence for the future.
As a result, the Falcons are considered one of the top landing spots for a new quarterback in the coming months, whether that be via free agency, trade or the draft.
Atlanta has been mentioned as a potential destination for Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields, for example, and Kirk Cousins could be an option in free agency.
Whatever the case may be, the Falcons really need to get this issue resolved.
Atlanta went 7-10 in 2023, but it contended for the NFC South division title all season long. Perhaps if it had a better quarterback, it would have won the division crown.
We’ll see what the Falcons decide to do at the position as the offseason progresses.
