Kirk Cousins agreed to sign with the Atlanta Falcons earlier this week, and he was officially introduced as a member of the team on Wednesday.
During his first media session, Cousins raved about the Falcons’ front office, crediting the camaraderie of everyone involved.
“When the owner, general manager, head coach, and quarterback are on the same page, that’s when you have really a chance to go win a Super Bowl,” Cousins said, via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “As I looked at the Atlanta Falcons, I believe strongly that the owner, head coach, general manager, and quarterback can all be on the same page. And that’s exciting for me, and so that’s why I’m thrilled to be here.”
Is that a little bit of a shot at the Minnesota Vikings? Perhaps.
Remember: Cousins wanted to stay with the Vikings, and Minnesota’s front office had maintained that it wanted to keep Cousins.
However, there was an obvious gap in terms of perceived value. The Vikings did not want to sacrifice their long-term financial flexibility, which led to Cousins signing a massive four-year, $180 million deal with Atlanta. You can certainly see how Minnesota would have felt that contract may have been crippling.
But for a team like the Falcons that has been in desperate need of a quarterback since the Matt Ryan era came to a close a couple of years ago, landing Cousins made perfect sense regardless of the cost.
Cousins had previously spent the last six years with the Vikings, making three trips to the Pro Bowl during his tenure with the club.
This past season, he made it through eight games before tearing his Achilles.
We’ll see if Kirk Cousins is fully recovered when he takes the field for the Falcons in 2024.
