If we learned anything from the Baltimore Ravens‘ disappointing loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game, it’s that they need more weapons offensively.
The problem for the Ravens is that they are slightly over the cap entering the offseason, so they probably won’t be able to spend big on any of the top wide receivers on the free-agent market.
That’s why Baltimore may need to go bargain hunting, and Garrett Podell of CBS Sports has identified a pretty interesting option for the club: Chicago Bears wide out Darnell Mooney.
A few seasons ago, Mooney looked primed for a breakout. During his second year in the NFL in 2021, he hauled in 81 receptions for 1,055 yards and four touchdowns.
The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Tulane, was selected by the Bears in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
However, in spite of his strong sophomore campaign, Mooney has been unable to truly separate himself as a reliable receiver in Chicago.
In the year following his apparent breakthrough season, Mooney logged just 40 catches for 493 yards and a couple of scores. Then, this past season, he caught 31 passes for 414 yards while reaching the end zone just once.
It seems pretty clear that Mooney has worn out his welcome in the Windy City, so a team like Ravens may be able to jump on him and land him on an affordable contract in free agency.
Baltimore absolutely needs some more talent behind Zay Flowers. Odell Beckham Jr. was a disappointment this past season and is hitting free agency anyway. Rashod Bateman is approaching bust territory. Yes, the Ravens have a terrific pair of tight ends in Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely, but they need more vertical threats for Lamar Jackson.
Mooney and his game-breaking speed would provide that.
Perhaps a change of scenery would do Mooney some good.
