Bill Belichick Could Leave New England To Coach New York Giants?

The New England Patriots and Bill Belichick could be heading toward a divorce at the end of the season. There were rumors during the offseason that the relationship between Patriots owner Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick was worsening and Kraft wanted to start seeing some positive results again.

Unfortunately, those positive results have not developed. The Patriots look like arguably the worst team in the NFL, in the midst of the worst season under Bill Belichick. Reportedly, anything short of a playoff appearance would lead to a parting of the ways and at this point, New England is in a better position to land the No. 1 pick than a playoff spot.

Missing the playoffs three out of four seasons without Tom Brady and seeming to whiff on his replacement in Mac Jones would be enough to ensure most coaches are shown the door. But Bill Belichick has a long leash given his history of success, so a move in-season seems unlikely.

Alas, parting ways seems like an inevitability. Kraft has set the goal of making the postseason and the Patriots look like they are going to fall woefully short. What could be next for the future Hall of Fame head coach? Former NFL quarterback and analyst, Boomer Esiason, believes a move to the first franchise he knew, the New York Giants, could be on the table.

“What happens if the Giants end up with the No. 1 overall pick and Bill Belichick decides it is time to leave New England,” Esiason said on “Boomer & Gio.” “Now what? Caleb Williams and Bill Belichick together in New York. You don’t think Giants fans would lose their minds over that?”

The Giants were a pleasant surprise in 2022 in the first season under general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll. They wen 9-7-1 and made the playoffs but this season has been disastrous for them as well.

New York is currently 1-4 and have also thrown their hat into the ring as the worst team in the NFL. Would Bill Belichick really consider taking over their operations if they landed a prospect such as Caleb Williams?

It is certainly an interesting idea, but one that doesn’t seem plausible. It would be shocking and a detriment to the franchise if the Giants fired a fourth consecutive head coach after two seasons with the team. While Bill Belichick certainly carries cache, it would be a major surprise if New York is in the market for another head coach this offseason.
