The Buffalo Bills’ defense took a major hit last week when cornerback Tre’Davious White suffered an Achilles injury, ending his season prematurely. This isn’t the first time that the Bills will have to survive without their star cornerback, as he suffered a torn ACL previously.
Replacing a player of White’s caliber certainly won’t be easy. Before injuries hit, White had made the Pro Bowl in two straight years, earning a spot on the First and Second All-Pro Teams in consecutive seasons.
The only move that Buffalo has made to this point is adding Herb Miller to the practice squad. No offense to Miller, but the Bulls are going to need more than that. Going outside the organization is the only chance they will have to find a suitable replacement for White.
Ryan O’Halloran of The Buffalo News urged the front office to make a move. He believes a splash acquisition would be best, suggesting that the Bills look to make a trade for Denver Broncos star cornerback, Patrick Surtain II.
This could be the time to strike a deal with Denver. The youth movement is in full swing as they are moving on from numerous players after a rough 1-3 start. Their defense has been embarrassing thus far this season, giving up a record-setting performance against the Miami Dolphins in Week 3 before Justin Fields had the best game of his career in Week 4 for the Chicago Bears.
Veteran Randy Gregory was the first casualty and certainly won’t be the last. Surtain isn’t someone that the Broncos are going to give away, as the Bills are going to have to come with a strong offer.
O’Halloran pitched the idea of Buffalo trading cornerback Kaiir Elam, a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, a 2024 first-round pick and a 2025 second-round pick that can turn into a first-rounder should the Bills win a Super Bowl this season or next, in exchange for Surtain. That kind of all-in move is something a contender such as Buffalo should be looking to make.
The cost is steep, but if the team can bring a ring to Orchard Park, it would all be worth it. In Year 3 of his rookie contract, Surtain will be a bargain for this season and next before a long-term extension will have to be worked out. But, as one of the best young defenders in the NFL, the Bills should be more than willing to pay the premium price it will cost to keep him.
