Cleveland Browns: 3 Takeaways from Week 1 Tie vs. Steelers

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

Forget the Tie, This Was a Win for the Browns

The Cleveland Browns did not play the New York Giants or the New York Jets. The went toe-to-toe against one of the best teams in the NFL and held their own. Yes, they came out with a tie. And while that may hurt them going forward, it will hurt the Steelers as well.

What this game also did was give them confidence going against the New Orleans Saints in Week 2. For a team with one win in the last two years, the Browns needed a game like this. Although the uniforms are the same, this is not the same team who has struggled lately. The running game produced 177 yards on 38 carries, and the defense managed to keep one of the best offenses to just 21 points.

As the season progresses, the Browns will learn how to manage timeouts better and late-game situations. When Hue Jackson realizes his players will have him in a position to win games, his coaching instincts will kick in with better decision-making.

A 21-21 tie to begin the season is far better than a 21-0 loss.

This was a step in the right direction for the Browns. And while they didn’t get the win, they earned some respect from around the NFL.
