His Last 8 Starts Have Been Ugly

You can’t judge Cam Newton’s NFL career based on his recent lack of success, but his level of play over his past 8 starts throughout 2018-19 have been the worst stretch since he entered the league. He lost each of those games for an 0-8 record, threw 9 touchdowns to 10 interceptions, took 23 sacks, fumbled 4 times, threw with 64.9% accuracy and did not score a rushing touchdown.

Cam Newton has found the most success when he is able to beat teams with his legs and overpower defenders with his humongous frame, so removing mobility from his arsenal changes his entire playing style. His career accuracy is below 60% (59.57%) and he hasn’t had the strongest supporting cast of receivers around him throughout his career.

In the last two seasons, Newton has had the likes of Christian McCaffrey, DJ Moore, Curtis Samuel and Greg Olsen at his disposal, but he went to the Super Bowl playing with Ted Ginn Jr. and Corey Brown.

Looking at his career as a whole, it is more likely than not that the past season and a half are injury-outliers and a fully healthy version of ‘Superman’ would still be a high-end starting caliber QB in the NFL.
