Panthers Projected To Pursue Superstar WR In Free Agency

The Carolina Panthers need some weapons for young quarterback Bryce Young, and with a decent chunk of cap room heading into the offseason, they should be able to find some answers.

ESPN’s Matt Bowen thinks the Panthers could look to an NFC South division rival for a potential solution, mentioning Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans as a great fit for the squad.

Evans is slated to hit free agency next month, and he and the Buccaneers are apparently far apart in contract talks. This does not necessarily mean that Evans is surely a goner from Tampa Bay, but it does signify that he will likely become a free agent in the coming weeks.

The 30-year-old is coming off of yet another terrific season in which he caught 79 passes for 1,255 yards and an NFL-leading 13 receiving touchdowns en route to his fifth Pro Bowl selection.

Evans, who played his collegiate football at Texas A&M, was selected by the Bucs with the seventh overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft.

It didn’t take long for Evans to stamp his name among the top wide outs in football, as he snared 68 balls for 1,051 yards and 12 scores during his rookie campaign.

That marked the first of 10 straight 1,000-yard seasons for Evans, setting a league record.

Evans’ best season during that run (which is still active) came in 2018, when he hauled in 86 receptions for 1,524 yards while reaching the end zone eight times.

Outside of Adam Thielen, the Panthers’ depth at wide receiver is very thin, so they could certainly use another pass-catcher. Evans would absolutely fit the bill and would provide Young with a true No. 1 receiver he could trust.

Carolina went just 2-15 this past season and has not posted a winning campaign since 2017.
