Justin Fields has finally started to show signs of breaking out over the past couple of weeks, but could he still be a trade piece for the Chicago Bears?
Multiple media members think so (via Jordan J. Wilson of Heavy.com).
First, WGN columnist Eli Ong wrote that it “makes too much sense” to not at least consider moving the young quarterback following his strong pair of performances in Weeks 4 and 5.
Former NFL defensive lineman Chris Canty agrees.
“Sell high. Go ahead and move on from Justin Fields right now,” Canty said on ESPN’s Get Up this week. “His value is not gonna get higher than what it is. You’re talking about a player who has a 25-game sample size, and they’ve won six games. Not to say that Justin Fields can’t be a good quarterback, not to say that Justin Fields can’t play winning football. What I’m saying is, based on where the Chicago Bears are in their program development, it makes more sense for them to move away from Justin Fields now rather than allow him to play out the rest of the season and potentially de-value what he could be in a trade to another team.”
Both Ong and Canty make compelling points.
Up until recently, Fields had been lamented a bust by just about everyone. After all, it was just three weeks ago that the 24-year-old went 11-for-22 with 99 yards in a blowout loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, and as Canty pointed out, Fields is just 6-24 as a starter.
Couple that with the fact that the Bears have a chance at landing the No. 1 overall pick and the opportunity to select USC quarterback Caleb Williams in this year’s NFL Draft, and you can see why some are calling for the Bears to gauge Fields’ trade value.
Chicago has between now and the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline to move Fields. Of course, the Bears can always punt to the offseason and re-evaluate then, but then they are taking the chance of Fields regressing in the coming months.
One thing is for sure: Chicago has a rather difficult decision to make regarding the club’s future under center.
