Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields has been under fire for his poor start this season, as Bears fans have grown frustrated with Fields’ lack of production since being taken with the 11th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Fields was particularly subpar in Chicago’s Week 2 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, going 16-for-29 with 211 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions, one of which resulted in a game-altering pick-six. In addition, Fields was sacked six times and fumbled twice.

The problem is, Fields does not seem to be taking accountability for his performance. Instead, he is placing the blame eleswhere.

While Fields acknowledged that he has been “robotic” over the first couple of weeks of 2023, he cited “coaching” as the reason for it, per Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune.

But Fields did not stop there.

He offered a detailed explanation as for what he meant.

“I don’t think it’s too many coaching voices but I just think when you’re fed a lot of information at a point in time and you’re trying to think about that info when you’re playing, it doesn’t let you play like yourself,” he said in a press conference. “You’re trying to process so much information to where it’s like, if I just simplify it in my mind I would have did this. I saw a few plays on Sunday, if I was playing like my old self, we would have had a positive play. There would have been more third down conversations. I think that’s just the biggest thing for me is playing the game how I know how to play and how I’ve been playing my whole life. That’s what I got to get back to doing.”

Fields has struggled ever since entering the NFL. In his rookie campaign, he threw seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 12 games and 10 starts. The following year, Fields showed some progression as a passer, throwing for 2,242 yards, 17 touchdowns and 11 picks, but where he really shined was when he was able to use his legs. He racked up 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns as a rusher in 2022.

But through two weeks this season, Justin Fields has not been great as a passer or as a rusher. Case in point, he carried the ball four times for just three yards against the Buccaneers.
