Chicago Bears Urged To Pursue Big-Time Pass-Rusher

The Chicago Bears aren’t going anywhere this season. That much we know. After all, the Bears are 1-4 and are already three games behind the Detroit Lions for first place in the NFC North. The chances of them contending for a Wild Card berth seem slim to none, as well.

So, it’s probably time for Chicago to start thinking about 2024.

The Bears have a lot of holes that need patching, but one serious issue in particular is their lack of a pass rush. Chicago has tallied just seven sacks through the first five weeks of the season, and last year, the Bears ranked dead last in the NFL with just 20 sacks.

That’s why Chicago should take a long, hard look at Jacksonville Jaguars edge rusher Josh Allen in free agency this offsesaon.

Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder notes that the Bears are projected to have about $97 million in cap space come springtime, which would be more than enough for them to sign Allen.

Allen has already logged 17 tackles, six sacks and a forced fumble this season.

The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Kentucky, was originally selected by the Jaguars with the seventh overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Allen had a fantastic rookie campaign, racking up 44 tackles, 10.5 sacks and a couple of forced fumbles en route to a Pro Bowl appearance. A knee injury ended his sophomore year after just eight games, but in 2021, Allen returned and totaled 71 tackles, 7.5 sacks, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He then posted similar numbers last season, finishing with 57 tackles, seven sacks, four forced fumbles, a pair of fumble recoveries and a defensive touchdown.

The Bears were finally able to pick up their first win of the year in Week 5, routing the Washington Commanders by a score of 40-20 last Thursday.
