Coaching Staff
When Ryan Pace hired Matt Nagy to be the next head coach of the Chicago Bears, it signified not only a commitment to Mitch Trubisky but an entire shift in offensive philosophy to fit his strengths. Matt Nagy is the latest coach to come from the Andy Reid coaching tree and with it, he brings a West Coast style offense that will draw comparisons to the both his former team and the Doug Pederson led Philadelphia Eagles.
Under Matt Nagy, the Bears can expect a heavy dose of short, quick passes and combination of timing routes such as the slant or the comeback. The use of RPOs (run-pass options) will also be heavily featured. The offense will also look to use the running backs more in the passing game. This should excite Bears fans as it will give running backs Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen an expanded opportunity to contribute more often.
Matt Nagy has been known to take offensive ideas and philosophies from a plethora of sources and is doing just that by hiring former Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich as the new Bears offensive coordinator. Helfrich brings a vast experience on the offensive side of the ball. He was the offensive coordinator under Chip Kelly before becoming the head coach there. His offensive philosophy has been known to be fast-paced while utilizing zone reads and misdirections to throw off the defense which should align itself well Mitch Trubisky’s athleticism.
Perhaps the most underrated addition to the coaching staff is the return of offensive line coach Harry Hiestand. Considered as one of the best in the business in developing offensive lineman, Hiestand will set his sights on developing James Daniels and Cody Whitehair while refining the skills of the veterans along the offensive line.
