The Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl 57 over the Philadelphia Eagles, giving them two championships in four years. If they want to win in back-to-back seasons, they will certainly have their work cut out for them.
Kansas City has a few holes on their roster to fill as some players departed in free agency. Retaining everyone is an impossible task, so the team has to pick and choose who to prioritize. The area that was arguably hit the hardest was the offensive line.
The Chiefs opted not to place the franchise tag on left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. for the second straight season. He would eventually sign a four-year deal worth just over $64 million with the Cincinnati Bengals. Right tackle Andrew Wylie also departed, following offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy to the Washington Commanders.
The Chiefs were able to make a splash in free agency, signing Jawaan Taylor away from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Regardless of if they move him to left tackle or not, they are still short of another start since their bookends both left in free agency.
Looking to fill that void, the Chiefs could make a move up the 2023 NFL Draft board. In a recent mock draft over at CBS Sports, that is exactly what they do. Kansas City completes a trade with the New York Giants, acquiring the No. 25 overall pick in exchange for Nos. 31, 122 and 217.
With the No. 25 pick in the mock, the Chiefs selected offensive tackle Dawand Jones out of Ohio State. Jones is a mountain of human being, standing 6’8” and weighing 374 pounds. With long arms and a Pterodactyl wingspan, Jones could be a plug-and-play right tackle option for Kansas City as a rookie.
While there is some fine-tuning that needs to be done, you cannot touch some of the attributes that Jones possesses. Those cover up some of his deficiencies currently, so a good coaching staff will be able to turn him into a very good starter with relative quickness.
The Chiefs certainly possess a great staff, making Kansas City an ideal landing spot for Jones. With Lucas Niang on the roster, he wouldn’t have to be thrown into the fire right away either, as the Chiefs could give him a little more time to hone his craft should he need it.
