Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase suffered a back injury during his team’s win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night, and his status for Week 10 is in question as a result.
Chase sustained the injury during the third quarter when he jumped to try to catch a deep ball thrown by quarterback Joe Burrow but ended up landing hard on his back. He was tended to by athletic trainers on the sideline and appeared to be in pain.
The star wide out still played in 63 of the Bengals’ 70 offensive snaps and logged four passes for 41 yards on the night, but he is not 100 percent healthy at the moment.
“I’m alive,” Chase said, via Mike Petraglia of Jungle Roar Pod (h/t Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk). “That’s the best thing right now. … It’s pretty sore just moving around.”
Cincinnati head coach Zac Taylor called Chase day to day. He will undergo more tests to determine the extent of his injury and to find out about his practice availability.
“All I can do is pray and be a good teammate and be there for those guys and try to get healthy,” Chase said. “That’s the only thing I can do right now. Everybody is counting on me to be healthy.”
Prior to Week 9, Chase had posted at least five catches in every game this season, so the win over the Bills marked the end of that streak.
On the season overall, the 23-year-old has caught 64 passes for 697 yards and four touchdowns. He has tallied three 100-yard efforts, topping out at 192 yards in Cincy’s Week 5 win over the Arizona Cardinals.
Ja’Marr Chase, who played his collegiate football at LSU, was selected by the Bengals with the fifth overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.
He has made the Pro Bowl in each of his first two seasons.
Cincinnati has now won four in a row and improved to 5-3 with the victory over Buffalo. The Bengals will look to extend their winning streak when they take on the Houston Texans next Sunday.
