The Cleveland Browns’ defense continued to impress on Sunday afternoon, holding the San Francisco 49ers to 17 points in a two-point Week 6 win.
Afterward, Browns cornerback Greg Newsome made a bold statement on his X account.
Now I’m not sure if Newsome was referring to Cleveland’s defense or the team as a whole, but if it’s the former, it’s hard to disagree with that statement right now.
The Browns’ defense does, in fact, rank No. 1 in the NFL at the moment, allowing just 200.4 yards per game. The Baltimore Ravens are in second at 260.8 yards per game, so there is a sizeable gap between Cleveland and the rest of the league in that category through the first six weeks.
The Browns are also giving up just 15.4 points per game, which ranks fifth in the NFL (although yards are typically a better indicator of how good a defense actually is).
Cleveland handed the 49ers their first loss of the season, which came as a massive shock considering the Browns were missing quarterback Deshaun Watson for the second straight game due to a shoulder injury.
San Francisco had thoroughly dominated its opponents over the first five weeks, most recently hammering the Dallas Cowboys by a score of 42-10 before rolling into Cleveland.
Obviously, the Browns had other plans, holding upstart quarterback Brock Purdy to just 125 yards. Purdy, who also threw his first interception of the season in the loss, went a paltry 12-for-27.
Cleveland held the Niners to 215 yards of total offense and only allowed the 49ers to complete three third downs in 12 tries.
The Browns improved to 3-2 with the win and will head on the road to battle the Indianapolis Colts next weekend. Cleveland is hopeful that it will have Watson back for the matchup.
