The Indianapolis Colts are one of the hottest teams in the NFL. They have won three games in a row, pushing their record to 6-5 on the season, right in the mix for a playoff spot in the AFC. With five out of their remaining six games also against teams in the mix in the conference, the Colts somewhat control their own fate.
Unfortunately, their path to earning a playoff spot hit a little bit of a snag this week. Star running back Jonathan Taylor is going to be sidelined for a few weeks as it was revealed that he needs to undergo surgery on his thumb.
Colts owner Jim Irsay has said that the team is hoping Taylor will miss only two or three weeks. But, that could be on the optimistic side of recovery. Depending on the kind of surgery and severity of the injury, he could be sidelined even longer.

Injuries have defined 2023 for Taylor. He began the season on injured reserve as he was continuing his rehab from offseason ankle surgery. His training camp was eventful for all the wrong reasons as he was at an impasse with the franchise about a contract in addition to the injuries he was dealing with.
The injury comes at an unfortunate time for Taylor, who is coming off arguably his best game of the season. He rushed for 91 yards with two touchdowns against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a 27-20 victory.
His workload was increasing in recent weeks as he was getting back into playing shape after missing the first four games of the season. While it is certainly disappointing that he will now have to sit out again after starting to find his stride, the Colts can at least be comfortable turning the offense over to Zack Moss.
While Taylor was sidelined earlier in the season, Moss was one of the most productive running backs in the NFL. He will assume the No. 1 role in the backfield once again and the offense shouldn’t miss a beat with him back in the leadback role.
