The Washington Commanders’ second preseason game of the year was a memorable one. They were taking on the Baltimore Ravens, who had entered the game with a record 24-game winning streak in the exhibition season. That win streak is no more, as Washington defeated Baltimore 29-28.
While it was certainly exciting to end the winning streak, the night wasn’t a total success for the Commanders. Late in the second quarter, star wide receiver Terry McLaurin suffered an injury after a catch and run.
It was diagnosed as a toe injury, and the early returns were positive. X-rays done were negative and the MRI that he underwent showed no structural damage. Alas, the newest update from ESPN’s Adam Schefter isn’t as encouraging.
While the Commanders are expressing optimism about McLaurin’s status, there is uncertainty surrounding his availability for Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals. He is dealing with a turf toe injury, which normally has a multi-week recovery period.
It is too early to definitively say whether or not McLaurin will be in the lineup for Week 1. But, he is going to put in the work necessary to at least give himself a chance to play in the season opener.
Given their opponent, it would not be surprising if the Commanders opted to hold McLuarin out and ensure that he is 100 percent healthy to return to the field. The Cardinals have made their intentions blatantly clear, as they look to be tanking during the 2023 season in hopes of landing the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Knowing that, the Commanders *should* be able to handle the Cardinals without their star receiver in the lineup. Should he not be able to suit up, Sam Howell’s top options would be Jahan Dotson, Curtis Samuel and Dyami Brown.
