Under new ownership, major changes are on the horizon for the Washington Commanders. Once the 2023 season ends, expect the current coaching staff and front office to be relieved of their duties as a new regime will be brought in by the new owners.

There is expected to be some major roster upheaval as well. One position that people will be keeping an eye on is quarterback. Sam Howell, who started the last 16 games for the Commanders, has been removed from the starting lineup in favor of veteran Jacoby Brissett.

Brissett will be starting in Week 17 against the San Francisco 49ers and likely Week 18 against the Dallas Cowboys as well. Howell has struggled mightily the last two weeks, getting benched in each game by head coach Ron Rivera.

In relief of Howell, Brissett has played well. He has completed 18-of-23 passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns against the Los Angeles Rams and New York Jets. Given that change, there are now questions about who will be the starting quarterback in 2024.

More than likely, that person is not yet on the team’s roster. According to Dan Graziano of ESPN, via JPAFootball on X, formerly Twitter, the Commanders are big fans of USC quarterback Caleb Williams.

With a record of 4-11, the Commanders could be in a position to snag one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft, such as Williams. They are currently in the No. 3 spot in the order, courtesy of a six-game losing streak.

With Howell being benched, there is a strong chance that he has started his final game for the Commanders. A new regime will likely look to bring in their own guy at the quarterback position to lead the team and it could very well come via the draft.

Still, four months away from the draft, things can certainly change between now and then. But, it seems like a strong possibility that the Commanders will be one of the franchises on the lookout for a new quarterback in 2024.
