Cowboys Looking To Trade Intriguing Offensive Weapon?

One of the bigger needs that the Dallas Cowboys had this offseason was finding some help at wide receiver. They have a star in CeeDee Lamb, but the reliability and production from the wide receivers behind him on the depth chart were certainly lacking.

Last season, it was Noah Brown with 555 receiving yards who finished second on the team amongst wide receivers. Brown departed in free agency, along with tight end Dalton Schultz, to the Houston Texans.

That created an even bigger void in the offense that needed to be filled. So, Jerry Jones hit the trade market, completing a deal with the Texans for wide receiver Brandin Cooks. Cooks has been a go-to receiver throughout his career and will bring much-needed steadiness and speed to the offense.

But, the Cowboys may not be done reshaping the depth chart at the position. In the opinion of Matt Holder of Bleacher Report, Michael Gallup is someone who could be on at some point this season as well.

“The Cowboys had to bring in some reinforcements and that’s why they traded for Brandin Cooks during the offseason. That alone puts Gallup’s future with the team in doubt, and Patrik Walker of the team’s website noted that second-year wide receiver Jalen Tolbert has been emerging during training camp.

Since Dallas now has two other options to serve as a second or third target behind CeeDee Lamb, Gallup is even more expendable. His contract is also team friendly as he’s signed through 2026 but it also includes a potential out after this season, increasing his value on the market.”

The Cowboys used a third-round pick on Jalen Tolbert in the 2022 NFL Draft and he has spoken about how much of a positive impact that Cooks has had on him. The SMU product could be in line for a bigger role in Year 2 based on the improvements he has made.

If those improvements are legitimate and Cooks continues to play at a high level, Gallup is certainly someone that could be expendable. He didn’t look the same last season working his way back from an ACL injury that he suffered near the end of the 2021 season.

Even before the injury, Gallup wasn’t having as much of an impact as he did in his first three seasons in the NFL. While the Cowboys liked him enough to re-sign him last offseason, if a team presented them with a strong trade offer, they would have to think long and hard about accepting it.
