Week 5 was a disaster for the Dallas Cowboys. They were hit head-on with a dose of reality, heading on the road to face the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday Night Football and getting run out of the stadium.
The Cowboys lost the game 42-10 as they were beaten thoroughly in every facet of the game. Defensively, Dallas had no answer for Brock Purdy through the air, as he completed 17-of-24 passes for 252 yards and four touchdowns.
They did find a little success slowing down Christian McCaffrey, who gained only 51 yards on 19 carries, but were steamrolled by Jordan Mason, who gained 69 yards on 10 carries. Both players found paydirt once as well.
Offensively for the Cowboys, they were never able to get anything going. They were stifled by a tough 49ers unit that never allowed them to get on track. Dak Prescott struggled, completing 14-of-24 passes for 153 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.
His one touchdown reception went to KaVontae Turpin, who made a nice adjustment for a 26-yard touchdown. But, even that positivity was short-lived as the Cowboys could be without Turpin for the foreseeable future.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Turpin could be dealing with the dreaded high-ankle sprain. The timetable for recovery is normally 4-6 weeks, but an MRI is going to be done to determine just how bad the injury is.
Turpin is someone that the Cowboys were getting more involved on offense this season compared to last. He already played 52 offensive snaps in 2023 after playing only 62 in 17 games last season.
A stellar special teams player, Dallas was trying to get some of that explosiveness and big play ability to translate to the offense. Turpin was answering the call, averaging 10.7 yards per touch on 11 touches. But, the Cowboys will now have to look elsewhere for that spark as Turpin is looking at a multi-week absence.
