The Dallas Cowboys look to have one of the strongest rosters in the NFL heading into the 2023 regular season. With training camp nearing a close, teams are going to have some difficult decisions to make when it comes to their rosters. With a roster as big as 90 players allowed in the offseason, that has to be cut down to 53 once the regular season rolls around.
For a team such as the Cowboys, they are going to have to move on from a few players that will have some value across the league. Instead of releasing them and receiving nothing in return, they could place the players on the trade block and attempt to make a deal, recouping some value.
Who could be on the trade block? In the opinion of Cody Williams of FanSided, there are three players who stick out on the Dallas roster as an intriguing trade piece. The first player that was mentioned was Kelvin Joseph.
Joseph was a second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Kentucky and things have not panned out according to plan. With Stephon Gilmore being acquired this offseason from the Indianapolis Colts, Joseph’s time in Dallas could be coming to an end.
KaVontae Turpin was the next player mentioned as an intriguing trade candidate. Listed as a wide receiver, the undrafted product out of TCU has made an impact in the NFL as a special teams player.
Turpin has been an excellent return man for the Cowboys, earning a Pro Bowl spot for his performance during the 2022 season. He had 29 punt returns for 309 yards and 21 kick returns for 603 yards. He could lose out in the numbers game as he doesn’t contribute at all offensively and the new rules have de-emphasized the return game.
Last but not least, Dorance Armstrong Jr. made the list. Armstrong has seen his name circulate in trade rumors as the Cowboys have a deep group of pass rushers. Heading into the final season of his contract, many see him as a logical trade piece if Dallas doesn’t want to commit to him long-term.
Coming off a career-best 8.5 sacks in 2022, Armstrong would have a ton of value on the trade market. A team that could offer him a larger role, potentially even as a starter, would be smart to acquire him as he is an ascending player. A Day 2 or early Day 3 pick would certainly have the Cowboys thinking long and hard about making a deal.
