The Dallas Cowboys are embarking on a pivotal offseason, with owner Jerry Jones signaling a clear intention to prioritize immediate success over long-term planning for the 2024 season.

Head coach Mike McCarthy and key players face the challenge of proving their ability to clinch the ultimate victory in the upcoming season. To bolster their chances, the Cowboys have made notable coaching adjustments, including reportedly adding Mike Zimmer as the new defensive coordinator.

With the offseason in full swing, attention turns to roster construction, with free agency looming large in March. Among the crucial decisions facing the Cowboys is the fate of several pending free agents.

One such decision centers on veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who appears eager to extend his tenure with the team.

In a recent interview with 105.3 The Fan, Gilmore expressed his desire to re-sign with the Cowboys and contribute to their championship pursuit. While Gilmore’s commitment is encouraging, questions linger regarding the contractual terms Dallas may offer.

“I for sure think we have the pieces to get where we want to be, and I want to be a part of that.”

Despite being a key asset following his acquisition last offseason, Gilmore’s future with the team is uncertain. With Trevon Diggs set to return from injury and DaRon Bland emerging as a standout cornerback, retaining Gilmore could prove challenging. While the option of transitioning Bland to the slot and retaining Gilmore exists, it appears unlikely given potential salary considerations.

OverTheCap estimates Gilmore’s contract valuation at $7.6 million, a figure that may exceed the Cowboys’ budgetary constraints. However, Gilmore’s postseason experience and championship pedigree could offer invaluable leadership and depth to a team eyeing a title run.

Ultimately, whether the Cowboys prioritize retaining Gilmore for his postseason prowess remains to be seen as they navigate a critical offseason aimed at positioning themselves for success in the upcoming season.
