As much as people want the Dallas Cowboys to trade for Derrick Henry, they have not expressed interest in the Tennessee Titans running back, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
The Cowboys were recently speculated as a mystery team in the Henry sweepstakes, with a rumor suggesting that Dallas would even be willing to eat some of the remainder of Henry’s 2023 salary.
But apparently, the Cowboys have no intention of trying to acquire Henry, which corroborates with owner Jerry Jones saying that the team did not plan on reaching out to any other clubs about deals ahead of the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline.
Schefter’s report says that the Titans have even told Henry that they intend to keep him, and while league sources still would not be surprised if Tennessee moves him, there evidently has not been much interest in the star halfback around the league. Schefter adds that rival teams have been scared off by Henry’s age, declining production, expiring contract and the rest of the money owed to him this season.
Dallas was considered a natural fit for Henry, as young running back Tony Pollard has struggled this season, averaging just 3.9 yards per carry in his first year without Ezekiel Elliott as a backfield running mate. The Cowboys also have limited depth behind Pollard.
However, the idea of Dallas swinging a deal for Henry seems to be more rooted in what people think the Cowboys should do rather than what they have actually been planning to do.
Derrick Henry has rushed for 425 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 4.3 yards per carry this season. While those are certainly not poor numbers, they are a far cry from what we are using to seeing from Henry, who turns 30 years old in December.
The University of Alabama product is one year removed from a 1,500-yard campaign, and back in 2020, Henry racked up 2,027 yards and 17 touchdowns on the ground.
It seems like the three-time Pro Bowler will play out the rest of the season in Tennessee.
