The Dallas Cowboys were rumored to be interested in running back Derrick Henry at the trade deadline this past season, but nothing came to fruition.
Well, now they can sign him outright as a free agent in a couple of weeks, and Bleacher Report’s Mitch Milani thinks that is exactly what the Cowboys will do.
During a live stream earlier this week, Milani said that he thinks Dallas will end up landing Henry.
“Speaking of Derrick Henry, I’ve got him going to the Cowboys,” Milani said. “If you’re thinking of it of contrasting what they experienced last year in the inefficiency of the running game led by Tony Pollard, and contrasting that to, ‘What do we need different at the position to give us an edge?’ Then Derrick Henry would make a lot of sense, just in thinking that way.”
Henry is not expecting to break the bank, with Spotrac projecting him to land a one-year, $10.3 million deal. For reference, Pollard made $10 million with the Cowboys last year.
Pollard is hitting free agency himself next month and is coming off of a rather disappointing campaign, so Dallas is expected to go in another direction at halfback.
Some have suggested that the Cowboys should pursue Saquon Barkley, but Barkley would likely be more expensive and does not bring the same durability that Henry does.
Henry is coming off of a season with the Tennessee Titans in which he rushed for 1,167 yards and 12 touchdowns while averaging 4.2 yards per carry en route to his fourth Pro Bowl appearance.
The 30-year-old spent has the first eight years of his career with the Titans, leading the NFL in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns in back-to-back years in 2018 and 2019. He topped out at 2,027 yards and 17 scores in the latter campaign.
However, Henry’s run in Tennessee has come to an end, and he will find a new home in the coming weeks.
We’ll see if the Cowboys can convince Derrick Henry to join them once free agency begins.
