The upcoming 2024 offseason presents the Dallas Cowboys with a series of pivotal financial decisions revolving around their core players. At the forefront of these decisions is securing a new contract for quarterback Dak Prescott.
However, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and edge rusher Micah Parsons are also poised for significant extensions of their own.
Drafted in 2020, Lamb precedes Parsons by a year. While Lamb is currently under contract for $17.99 million in 2024 due to his fifth-year option, Parsons is expected to have his option exercised this spring, ensuring his presence with the team through the 2025 season. Consequently, addressing Lamb’s contract emerges as a more immediate priority for the Cowboys.
Parsons recently acknowledged this dynamic during an appearance on NFL Network’s Super Bowl Live. Consequently, he is not aggressively pursuing an extension, despite being poised to command a contract that would likely position him among the top edge rushers in the league.
“If they’re ready to talk about a deal and get a deal done, I’ll be super excited. You know I’m ready to be [with the] Cowboys for life, this is the team I wanted to be with, this is the team I want to win a championship with.”
Similarly, Lamb’s next contract is anticipated to be substantial, with reports indicating his aspiration to become the NFL’s highest-paid receiver.
In 2023, Lamb set single-season franchise records for receptions (135) and receiving yards (1,749), accompanied by a career-high of 14 total touchdowns. These remarkable achievements earned him a first-team All-Pro selection and his third Pro Bowl invitation.
Negotiations for Lamb’s contract are likely to take precedence over discussions with Parsons, although Parsons has expressed openness to negotiating a deal in the near future.
Parsons has amassed an impressive 40.5 sacks in his three seasons with the Cowboys, recording at least 13 sacks in each campaign. His remarkable consistency has garnered him several accolades, including three All-Pro honors and three Pro Bowl selections, significantly elevating his market value.
Although Parsons’ new contract will not take effect until 2026, his aim would likely be to secure a deal comparable to or exceeding Nick Bosa‘s record-breaking extension with the 49ers in September.
However, negotiations for Micah Parsons’ extension are not expected to take place during this offseason, or at least until the situations with Prescott and Lamb become clearer. Nevertheless, given Parsons’ crucial role in Dallas’ defense, developments regarding his contract will be closely monitored in the coming months.
