Most of the headlines the Dallas Cowboys have grabbed this offseason have been for the wrong reasons, but they are now in the news for landing a very intriguing undrafted free agent.

According to Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys have signed University of Minnesota tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford. It’s a $225,000 salary guarantee with a $50,000 bonus.

Gehlken added that Spann-Ford had a “strong market” and that he is a player to watch in the upcoming months.

Spann-Ford is certainly an interesting prospect.

The 24-year-old stands at 6-foot-7 and weighs 270 pounds. He arrived at Minnesota in 2019 but did not begin to receive serious playing time until 2021, when he logged 23 catches for 296 yards and a touchdown.

The following season, Spann-Ford displayed some legitimate pass-catching chops, hauling in 42 receptions for 497 yards and a couple of scores. He went on to snare 25 balls for 239 yards while reaching the end zone twice in his final year with the Golden Gophers.

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com expressed concern of Spann-Ford’s hands in his draft profile, but qualified his statement by saying that Spann-Ford could be used to present matchup issues as a big target in the slot.

You would also have to think that Spann-Ford could represent a solid red-zone target given his massive size.

Spann-Ford is mostly known for his ability as a blocker, which Zierlein says could use some work.

The Cowboys already have a dependable tight end in Jake Ferguson, but you can never have enough depth in this league, so perhaps Spann-Ford will end up pushing for a roster spot.

We’ll see what happens in the coming months, but you can bet that Spann-Ford will be a topic of conversation among Dallas fans as the offseason progresses.
