Details of the Dallas Cowboys’ final offer to Dak Prescott revealed

The Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott have until Wednesday’s deadline to reach an agreement on a potential contract extension before talks have to be put on pause until next offseason.

Previously, the reported hold up in the talks between both sides has been the Cowboys’ preference for a five-year deal while Prescott prefers to have the outcome featuring four.

According to Jane Slater of NFL Network, the terms of the Cowboys’ final offer to Prescott features annual compensation worth $33-35 million annually with an excess of $100 million in guaranteed money.

Failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension would prompt Prescott to play on the franchise tag. He would earn $31.4 million during the 2020 season and if the Cowboys use the franchise tag on him again next offseason, he’d earn more than $37 million.

Prescott is coming off an impressive season that featured him completing 65.1 percent of his 596 pass attempts. His 388 completions resulted in 4,902 passing yards, 30 touchdown throws, and 11 interceptions. The main downside was that it resulted in just an 8-8 record for the Cowboys.

Managing to put together a season that features elite volume production but translates to more wins could help Prescott land an even more lucrative deal next offseason. It would be wise for the Cowboys to try to get a deal done this offseason, even if it’s for four-years.

The potential impacts to the NFL’s salary cap due to Covid-19 have not deterred teams from getting long-term deals done with elite players. It will be fascinating to see if the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott can get a deal done before the deadline passes.
