Could the Detroit Lions try and swing a deal for Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II this offseason?
The Lions just posted one of their best seasons in franchise history, but it’s still abundantly clear that their roster needs some work. That particularly goes for the defensive side of the ball.
More specifically, the Detroit’s pass defense was an abject disaster in 2023.
The Lions ranked just 27th in that category this past season, blatantly indicating the need for some rather significant upgrades in the secondary.
Bleacher Report’s David Kenyon thinks that attempting to complete a blockbuster trade for Surtain could be the way to go for Detroit.
Kenyon proposes that the Lions send the 29th overall pick in this year’s draft, a 2025 first-rounder and a 2025 fourth-rounder to the Broncos in exchange for Surtain.
But is that something Denver would consider?
Surtain is entering the fourth year of his rookie deal, and chances are, the Broncos will exercise his fifth-year option. That means the star defensive back is under team control through 2025.
Taking that into consideration, Denver does not have to be in any sort of rush to move Surtain.
Then again, on the other side of the coin, Surtain’s trade value will likely never be greater than it is now, especially considering that he is only going to make $1.1 million next season.
For that reason, the Broncos may want to cash in on Surtain if they plan on rolling with an all-out rebuild, and let’s face it: Denver needs a whole lot of help up and down its roster.
If the Broncos do place Surtain on the trade block, the Lions would certainly represent a fantastic fit for him.
Patrick Surtain II registered 69 tackles, an interception and 12 passes defended this past season en route to his second straight Pro Bowl appearance.
