Lions Trade For Commanders’ Chase Young In Bold Proposal

The Washington Commanders are in a tough spot at the moment.

They are 2-1 and are very much in contention in the rugged NFC East, but they also just lost 37-7 to the Buffalo Bills in what could have been considered a temperature test for the club.

Also, they have to figure out what they are doing with edge rusher Chase Young, whose contract is up at the end of the season.

Young has been a massive disappointment since being taken with the second overall pick of the NFL Draft back in 2020.

He put forth an impressive rookie campaign, posting 44 tackles, 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and a defensive touchdown en route to a Pro Bowl appearance, but since then, injuries and underwhelming performance in general have been the story for Young.

Young tore his ACL in Week 10 of his second season, a year in which he had only recorded 1.5 sacks through nine games. That caused him to miss all but three games in 2022, and Young also proceeded to miss the 2023 season opener due to a stinger.

The Commanders declined his fifth-year option, and trade speculation has been swirling around the 24-year-old ever since.

Could the Detroit Lions step in and try to make something happen ahead of the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline? Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox thinks so.

The Lions could certainly use another pass rusher in their front seven, and while Young has not been a true factor since 2020, they could afford to take the risk.

Detroit could send a 2024 third-round draft pick and a sixth-rounder to Washington in exchange for Young, allowing the Commanders to essentially hit the reset button on their selection of Young and to avoid letting him walk for nothing in the spring.

Again, Chase Young himself is a risk, but the Lions could afford to take gamble on him and wouldn’t be giving up much here. A third-round pick wouldn’t be so tough for them to surrender, making this a relatively low-risk, high-reward deal.
