Lions Urged To Target Former Pro Bowl QB In Free Agency

The Detroit Lions could certainly use some insurance behind Jared Goff, and who better to provide that for them than former Pro Bowl quarterback Ryan Tannehill?

Tannehill will represent one of the top available backup quarterbacks on the open market next month, and Christian Booher of All Lions thinks the team should pursue him in free agency.

The 35-year-old played in 10 games and made eight starts this past season and was benched in favor of rookie signal-caller Will Levis.

During his time on the field in 2023, Tannehill struggled, throwing for 1,616 yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 64.8 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 78.5.

Clearly, Tannehill is declining, but he would still represent a great option as a No. 2 quarterback.

The veteran has spent the last five years of his career with the Tennessee Titans and won Comeback Player of the Year award in 2019 after making 10 starts and totaling 2,742 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 70.3 percent of his passes and posting a league-high passer rating of 117.5. He also made the Pro Bowl for his efforts.

Tannehill’s best statistical season, however, probably came in 2020, when he threw for 3,819 yards, 33 touchdowns and seven picks while completing 65.5 percent of his throws and registering a 106.5 passer rating.

Over the last several years, Tannehill’s production has waned, so it has become apparent that he is no longer a starting-caliber gunslinger. But in a Joe Flacco type of role as a backup who can deliver in a pinch, Tannehill certainly has value.

That being said, whether or not the Lions would want to sign Tannehill and stunt the growth of current backup Hendon Hooker in the process is debatable.
