NFL Insider Gives Major Update On Cowboys, Dak Prescott Talks

Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys

It’s looking more and more like Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is going to enter 2024 without a new deal.

Prescott is preparing to enter the final year of his contract, and the Cowboys don’t seem to be in any hurry to get an extension done.

During a recent appearance on SportsCenter, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said that contract negotiations between Prescott and Dallas are dormant.

“But their negotiations so far with Dak have been described to me a passive or even nonexistent,” Fowler said. “There really hasn’t been anything going on, so their actions are saying that maybe if they have to sit on his $61 million cap hit this year then figure it out later then they’ll do that. They’ve been fiscally responsible not really spending any money, so they know they have to address this at some point in the offseason.”

Prescott is said to be asking for $60 million annually in his new deal, a price the Cowboys are evidently unwilling to pay.

Some have speculated that Dallas may allow Prescott to play out next season and permit him to test the free-agent market. In that scenario, the Cowboys would likely be banking on no other teams offering Prescott $60 million per year, which would then allow them to sign him back on a more economical deal.

That is, of course, if Dallas wants to retain Prescott long term in general.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has maintained that the franchise sees Prescott as its quarterback for the long haul, so, chances are, Dallas is just playing some hardball here.

Prescott is coming off of a terrific 2023 campaign in which he led the NFL with 36 touchdown passes to go along with 4,516 yards and just nine interceptions. He finished second in MVP voting for his efforts and earned his third Pro Bowl appearance.

There are still several months remaining in the offseason, but the fact that it’s already May and the Cowboys are apparently not even engaging Dak Prescott in contract talks doesn’t exactly paint a positive picture moving forward.
