Eagles Connected As Possible Suitor For Free Agent LB

There aren’t many teams in the NFL who have had as good of an offseason as the Philadelphia Eagles. Coming off a loss against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 57, Philadelphia faced a lot of holes on the roster and coaching staff needing to be filled.

Offensive and defensive coordinators Shane Steichen and Jonathan Gannon both left for head coaching jobs. Javon Hargrave, T.J. Edwards, Kyzir White, Chauncey Gardner-Johnson Jr., Miles Sanders, Marcus Epps, Isaac Seumalo and Andre Dillard all left in free agency.

Despite so many key losses, the general manager Howie Roseman did a great job of filling needs by signing other players and putting on another masterclass during the 2023 NFL Draft. The Eagles had arguably the highest-graded draft as Roseman navigated the board, hitting needs and value regularly.

The Eagles are set up to contend once again this year and for years to come. Roseman has put them in a great position and with being a contender there comes some perks. One of those perks is that veterans are willing to take pay cuts or team-friendly deals to sign with you.

One veteran that could fit that mold for Philadelphia that remains available in free agency is linebacker Leonard Floyd. The Eagles have been named as a landing spot for Floyd and the fit makes sense.

For the people that believe Philadelphia already has enough pass-rushing, we hear you. The Eagles had 70 sacks last season and four players recorded double-digits. Their second first-round pick this year was used on Georgia pass rusher Nolan Smith.

So, adding another pass rusher in Floyd may be overkill in the eyes of some, but it would be a worthwhile move. Roseman acquired Robert Quinn from the Chicago Bears ahead of the deadline last season and while he didn’t have a major impact with the Eagles, it kept him from joining one of the teams chasing them down in the standings.

Signing Floyd would have a similar impact. There is a lot left in his tank as he was one of the only bright spots on the Los Angeles Rams last season, registering 9.0 sacks and 31 quarterback pressures.

He would be joining a loaded pass-rushing group, but you can never have enough pass-rushers. It is like pitchers in the MLB; you can never have too many as the need will always arise for another one. Given the fact that he is owed $19 million by the Rams, Floyd may be willing to take a lower-paying contract to play for a contender in the Eagles.
