During their end-of-season press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach Nick Sirianni and general manager Howie Roseman addressed the team’s recent struggles.
The Eagles had experienced a dramatic collapse during the latter half of the season, one of the most surprising in NFL history.
The season began with promise, as the Eagles, coming off a Super Bowl LVII appearance in February 2023, started with a remarkable 10-1 record. Alongside the San Francisco 49ers, they were considered favorites to win the NFC. However, their season ended with a disappointing 1-6 run, culminating in a 32-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round.
The aftermath saw a wave of scrutiny and changes within the coaching staff, with several coaches losing their jobs. Many speculated that Sirianni himself might be at risk of losing his position. However, Roseman came to Sirianni’s defense during the press conference.
He emphasized that, before the season’s unfortunate conclusion, the Eagles had won 26 out of their previous 31 games under Sirianni’s leadership. He argued that it’s challenging to find an NFL head coach with such a successful track record. This statement, reported by Zach Berman of AllPHLY.com, appeared to secure Sirianni’s position.
Despite this, Sirianni is determined to prove himself once again and not take his role for granted.
“We’ve got to re-prove ourselves. We’ve got to go prove it again. That’s how I feel right now. That’s how I’m attacking this off-season. That’s how I’m attacking this upcoming season as we get ready for it. Just hungry to be able to prove myself again to Mr. Lurie and the faith that he’s had in me and Howie and the faith he’s had in me and the rest of the team and the city.”
With new coordinators expected to be hired for both the offense and defense, questions arose regarding Sirianni’s role. Nick Sirianni provided clarity on this matter:
“My job is to be the head coach of the team, not the head coach of the offense, not the head coach of the defense, not the head coach of the special teams, but be the head coach of the football team. So that’s building the culture. That’s making sure the culture is working with our five core values, are taking every day at a time.”
While the final seven games of the Eagles’ season exposed cracks in the team’s once-solid culture, it is believed that these issues are not beyond repair. Philadelphia boasts a wealth of talent on both sides of the ball, and as Roseman pointed out, the team has a recent history of success at a high level.
Although the Philadelphia Eagles may be undergoing a transitional phase, it’s premature to dismiss them in the upcoming 2024 season. The team retains considerable potential, and fans should remain hopeful for what lies ahead.
